Why These Five Questions? The Science Behind Our Assessment

The five questions that make up the Authentic Alignment Quick Quiz are carefully designed to provide a quick and accurate calibration of your authentic alignment based on based on established psychological research on authenticity.

What is authenticity?  Authentic alignment is the degree to which your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors align with your true self.

Studies in positive psychology and humanistic traditions show us that the admonishment to live authentically isn’t just feel-good advice.  When you align your presence with your true self, you experience increased happiness, life satisfaction, resilience, self-esteem, and reduced stress or depression. For example, research from self-determination theory (by psychologists like Edward Deci and Richard Ryan) emphasizes that authenticity fosters well-being by fulfilling our basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

In creating the five questions that make up our Authenticity Quiz, we attempted to line them up with key dimensions of authenticity identified in validated psychological assessments, such as the Authenticity Scale by Wood et al. (2008), which measures authenticity across internal (self-awareness) and external (behavioral) aspects.

The five questions provide a quick, research-backed snapshot of your "alignment"—how closely your daily life matches your inner truth—without needing a full clinical evaluation. Quizzes like this have demonstrated validity in psychology for sparking self-reflection and predicting well-being outcomes, as they tap into unbiased self-processing, relational honesty, and consistent self-expression.

Here's a direct breakdown of each question, why it was chosen, how it reveals alignment insights, and why it matters for your growth.

Question 1: "I make decisions based primarily on what feels right to me rather than what others expect."
An important dimension in authentic alignment, as defined in self-determination theory, is how autonomous you are in your decision-making. This question is design to gauge how much external pressures (like societal norms or others' opinions) override your internal compass.  The more your decisions feel forced by external pressure, the more likely you are living in low alignment with your authenticity.

Why does it matter? Research shows that when you are making autonomous choices, without external pressure, you experience less regret and burnout and boost vitality and self-esteem.  People who score low here often report higher stress from living incongruently.

In The Authentic Growth Project™ methodology, this question ties to the "Path" aspect of the Four Aspects Framework (Light, Shadow, Path, Mirror), which explores how you navigate choices authentically.

Question 2: "I express my honest thoughts and feelings, even when they differ from others' opinions."
An important aspect of authentic alignment is whether you are able to sustain your values in your interactions with others.  This is a key factor in scales like the Authenticity Inventory.

A low score might highlight "masking" behaviors that stem from fear of conflict.  When you suppresses your authentic voice you can easily experience emotional disconnection.

Why does it matter? Studies show that when we are able to express ourselves honestly, we build stronger relationships, experience lower anxiety and feel greater subjective well-being.  Suppressing our honest voice correlates with depression and isolation.

This dimension aligns with the "Mirror" aspect in The Authentic Growth Project, which examines how you're reflected in social contexts.  It also supports the "Engage Yourself" phase of The Authentic Life System™, where we build safe expression habits.

Question 3: "I have a clear sense of my core values and what matters most to me."
This questions the degree to which we are self-aware and unbiased in our self-assessment.  This attribute is central to authenticity models like Lehman et al.'s framework of consistency and connection. The question helps us uncover gaps in internal clarity.  Studies show that vague values, a sign of gaps in internal clarity, consistently lead to aimless decisions.

Why does it matter? Psychological research has demonstrated that qualities like meaning in life and resilience can be predicted by the degree to which an individual is clear about their values.  Without this clarity, people experience "drift" and lower satisfaction. In The Authentic Growth Project, this attribute connects to the "Light" aspect (your natural strengths and values) and the "Claim Yourself" phase of The Authentic Life System, where we use tools like the Authentic Values Wheel to define and live by personal principles.

Question 4: "My career and daily activities reflect my natural strengths and interests."
This question draws from humanistic psychology's emphasis on self-actualization and congruence to assess how aligned our daily choices are with our strengths.  Alignment with internal strengths is a strong indication of alignment with articulated values.  When these two aspects are mismatched, we will experience "external drift," where daily life erodes energy.

Why does it matter? When you engage in activities that align with your values, you enhance vitality and prevent burnout.  Evidence shows that misalignment contributes to chronic dissatisfaction and health issues. This observation is reflects our "Path" and "Light" aspects, and designing a life where you achieve that integration is one of the objectives of The Authentic Life System "Evolve Yourself" phase, which guides you to sustainable habit-building.

Question 5: "People who know me in different contexts (work, home, social) would describe me similarly."
The ability to be consistent across roles is a hallmark of authenticity.  When we are inconsistent and different from role to role, we begin to compartmentalize, which fragments self-identity.

Why does it matter? When we present ourself consistently across roles, we foster trust with each other, reduce cognitive dissonance, and support our overall health overall psychological health. This quality of authentic alignment is at the foundation of our Four Aspects Framework.  The “Mirror” aspect particularly helps to evaluate how our external presentation is reflected back to us by the people we encounter, and how effectively that maps to our true values.

Putting It All Together

Together, these five questions form a holistic, evidence-based measure of authenticity's key dimensions: self-awareness, expression, value clarity, life alignment, and consistency. Like similar short scales in psychology, your answers to these questions reliably predict well-being and growth potential.  Your awareness of your alignment is essential to making changes and adjustment that help you pursue a more authentic life.  At The Authentic Growth Project, we believe that structured reflection leads to flourishing.

This quiz directly embodies The Authentic Growth Project's methodology: a self-guided, no-hustle approach to growth via the Four Aspects Framework and five phases (Meet Yourself for awareness, Claim Yourself for values, Engage Yourself for action, Evolve Yourself for sustainability, and Legacy for impact). Each question sparks the "small moments of awareness" we emphasize, guiding you from insight to intentional living.  This method is backed by science and delivered with compassion. If this resonates, your personalized toolkit awaits to build on these foundations.
